Pinoy Blender made the idea of producing the first ever Open Movie in the Philippines possible. It became the medium for the members to gather and collaborate in making a project with their goal to empower the idea of Open Movies and to promote the Filipino culture. Through PBUG, the members are able to express what they would like to have and to do for the community. How did PBUG started and who were the persons behind the making of this community? Why did the members choose “Buko” for the name of the project? What does the word “Bagani” means and what is its significance to the story?
Pinoy blender is an online community founded by jdam, ann, and reynante on February of 2008. It is a forum where members of the community can talk and share about anything related with the Open Source 3d application Blender or any other topics. During the first meetup, the members came up with the idea of making the first ever Open Movie in the Philippines. In an Open Movie, everyone can share their own opinion and suggestions with regards to the making of the movie.
The members agreed that the movie should be about Lapu-lapu since he was the first Filipino hero. The project was named “The Buko Project ” because the buko signifies the tree of life. According to jsmataro, the buko as a fruit refreshes the soul with a drink that comes from above yet deeply rooted on the ground. As a blog, it reflects the story of ideas coming from nowhere but deeply entwined with the community.
The movie, “Bagani” is about the the life and struggles of the two heroes: Lapu-Lapu and Magellan. It speaks of a romantic ideal that is to become heroes in our own ways by serving the interest of our nations. The two heroes sacrificed for the interest of their country like those who got involved in the historic battle.
The word Bagani is strange and unfamiliar to most of us. What does the name mean? Bagani stands for hero in English. It is a warrior who has the spirit of a “talagbusao”. The spirit gives courage to the warrior to fight for their community. It was chosen as the title for the movie because it represents the two main characters. It will not need subtitles like other international films with native titles because the title alone speaks of the Filipino culture. Aside from that, the the word ‘bagani’ does not give away the content of the film. It would keep the readers and the audience guessing and curious about the movie.
